Visit Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in San Francisco for Yummy Cookies

While in San Francisco I was able to visit their Chinatown and had an amazing time sampling delicious Chinese cuisine at Hang Ah Tea Room (a Chinese restaurant specializing in dim sum and other delectable options). I did some research beforehand and learned all about Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. Visiting Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory was a must for me because I love fortune cookies. A delicious crunchy cookie that comes with a fortune? I mean what’s not to love? Read more about this experience below.

Fortune Cookie History

The history surrounding fortune cookies is actually pretty muddled. There are theories which point to a Japanese immigrant creating the cookie in California, and other theories which suggest it was actually a Chinese immigrant in California. It is also believed that fortune cookies can be dated all the way back to the 19th century. Although we may never truly know who, what, how, when, or where they originated, one thing is for certain: they are succulent.

What Are Fortune Cookies?

A fortune cookie is typically made from flour, eggs, sugar, sesame seed oil, and vanilla. The cookies are usually crunchy or crackly but some places offer a softer version of the cookie as well. The cookies have a distinctive crescent shape and have a message inside. The messages usually have a quote or saying with lottery numbers.

A Little About Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory

Golden Gate Cookie Factory was founded in 1962 and is actually a landmark in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The location is as follows:  56 Ross Alley, San Francisco, CA 94108 and the hours of operation are Monday-Wednesday from 9am-5pm and Thursday-Sunday 9am-6pm. The factory presents with a friendly atmosphere and excellent service.

Fortune Cookies at Golden Gate Cookie Factory

Now that we covered the history behind fortune cookies and Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory let’s talk about the pièce de résistance the cookies! This factory offers delicious tasting fortune cookies made from fresh ingredients. It’s a natural choice to want to try their original vanilla flavor, but it’s important to note that the menu items offer different flavor choices for the rest of the cookies.

If you’re feeling adventurous like me, make sure to try their strawberry, and green tea flavors you won’t be disappointed. I really enjoyed their green tea flavor pictured below. They also have chocolate or strawberry dipped cookies and cookies with sprinkles as well. I was thrilled to see there were different varieties because I had normally only encountered the vanilla version.

In the event you’re unable to make it to San Francisco directly, you can also order online. However, you can only pick up the cookies in-store. This is subject to change so keep an eye out. You can order a custom pack of 50 cookies for $17.50 or a pack of 100 for $35.00. The cookies sold in the stores have different prices as well to fit any budget. With affordable prices like these, there’s just no excuse not to try them out.

Experience at Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory

Now I know what you’re thinking, what makes this site worth visiting? Well for one, you actually get to see the fortune cookies being made on premises and in my opinion that’s one of the coolest parts. I mean what’s not to like about freshly baked cookies? If that doesn’t entice you then seeing the cookies made in a copper rotating griddle wheel right in front of your eyes will. This machine helps make 10,000 cookies per day depending on the time of the year. Video below.

Not sure if you’re going to like the cookies? No worries. Upon entering the factory you will be presented with a free sample of warm cookies which are sure to whet your appetite. Last but not least, you can also create your own fortune cookie message to your liking. This goes for custom orders as well.

San Francisco Chinatown and Other Site Suggestions

In case you’re looking for suggestions on things to do in this area or San Francisco in general, you can also visit the Japanese Tea Garden which I’ve mentioned before in a guest post here. The fortune cookie’s convenient location allows you to be within walking distance of many shops and some of the best Chinese food San Francisco has to offer in the United States. Need some more ideas? Check out Alcatraz and Little Italy.

Dim Sum History/Origin

I visited San Francisco in the Spring and checking out Chinatown was an absolute must for me. I’m from New York City (Queens specifically) and NYC is home to the largest Chinatown in the United States. However, San Francisco is home to the oldest Chinatown in North America. I make it a point to visit Chinatown whenever I visit a new place to immerse myself in the culture, and to learn about Chinese people and their history. I even visited Chinatown during my trip to Toronto as well.

You may be wondering what Dim Sum is. Dim Sum are small Chinese dishes that are associated with Cantonese cuisine, but it is also present in other Chinese cuisines as well. Some popular dim sum dishes include sesame balls, shu mai, barbecue pork buns, char siu bao, har gow / ha gow, chicken feet, bok choy, gin cha siu bow, pork pot stickers, shrimp dumpling 蝦餃, and soup dumplings 小籠包 to name a few. You can also order green beans in most restaurants as well.

Hang Ah Tea Room Origin

While visiting it was a must that I check out Hang Ah Tea Room (located at 1 Pagoda Place, San Francisco, CA 94108) to sample some of their delicious and affordable eats. This staple has been around since 1920 and serves awesome food in an unpretentious setting.

Hang Ah is well known amongst San Francisco locals, tourists, and Chinese families alike as it is the oldest dim sum restaurant. Dining here is reminiscent of a taste of home. The current owners of the restaurant is Billy Lai and co-owner Frank Chui who are maintaining the charm and Chinese character that everyone has come to love of this old school gem.

Hang Ah Tea Room Experience

When I ate at Hang Ah Tea Room, I decided to order the shrimp dumplings, scallion pancakes, Chinese tea, and fried egg rolls.  I was full and delighted with the delectable tastes and aromas after eating these items. Feel free to dip your dim sum in chili oil, or soy sauce to amplify the tasting experience. If what I ordered doesn’t entice your taste buds, keep in mind there are plenty of dim sum items for you to choose from. Ready to book your Chinatown experience? Book this tour or take this one. Interested in showcasing your cooking skills? How about making your own Dim Sum with this.

I honestly loved my experience here and what makes it worth checking out is that you’re literally a part of history. This restaurant existed decades before and is still in operation today. This tells you that they must be doing something right. In addition not only is the food delicious, it is also super affordable. I went during midday and it wasn’t too crowded.  The restaurant takes credit cards and cash to pay for your meal, but I would suggest carrying cash. You’ll need about an hour or so to enjoy this restaurant as the food is served fast and piping hot.

St. Patrick’s Day in NY Fun Ways to Celebrate

St. Patrick’s Day in NY – Wondering how to spend St. Patrick’s Day in NY? I’ve got you covered with some of the best ideas of what to do for this upcoming holiday. In addition to sharing ideas of what you can do to celebrate, I’ll also share a brief history of the holiday. Read on to find out more!

Saint Patrick’s Day History

St. Patrick’s Day (which is March 17th) is simultaneously celebrated for the death of Saint Patrick and the Feast of Saint Patrick. What’s even more interesting about this holiday is that its origin was actually religious in nature with feasts included in the celebration. Saint Patrick converted the Irish to Christianity once he returned to Ireland from escaping. The holiday began in Ireland and is now widely celebrated in the United States. Now let’s talk about how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in NY.

St. Patrick’s Day in NY

Parades and Museums

The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade

There’s no way I could talk about this holiday without mentioning the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City. This is one of the oldest parades worldwide which takes place on the official holiday of March 17th with months of preparation. Not only is it one of the oldest, but it’s also one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the Big Apple.

alt = "St. Patrick's Day Bag Pipe Players wearing traditional attire".
St. Patrick’s Day Bagpipe Players

If you’re interested in attending and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in NY, you can catch the parade route at the beginning from 5th Avenue at East 44th Street and the parade ends at 79th Street. At the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade you can expect to learn about Irish culture, Irish heritage, and see Irish dancers and Irish families. Whether it’s your first parade or seventh, you’ll be sure to have a good time. If you can’t attend in person you can also watch a livestream of the event. Also, as an FYI, Fifth Avenue has a plethora of options for shopping if you’re up for it after or prior to the NYC parade.

Irish American Heritage Museum

Exploring the Irish American Heritage Museum is a great option to learn more about Irish ancestry and their history in America. Located in Albany, New York about 2 to 3 hours away if you’re looking to explore beyond New York City. The museum offers plenty of exhibitions and learning opportunities; it’s hours are Wednesday-Friday 11am-4pm, Saturday-Sunday 12pm-4pm, and closed Monday and Tuesday.

You can become a member of the museum or donate to help the organization. If you’d prefer a museum directly in the city feel free to check out the Tenement Museum. These are great options if you’d like a sober St. Patrick’s Day.

Should You Carry-On or Check Your Bag? Top Reasons Inside

Ready to travel and book your flight but you’re wondering whether or not you should carry-on your bag or check it on the plane? Then this blog post has you covered. I’ll give you some pros and cons to this bag debate, teach, and even tell you what I like to do to help you plan your trip. Read on to find out more!

What is a carry-on bag and checked bag?

Before we can get into the pros and cons, let’s distinguish the difference between these two bags. A carry-on bag is luggage or a personal item that you can keep with you the entirety of your trip. This means you can bring your bag onto the plane with you and store it in the overhead compartment or underneath your seat depending on the carry-on size and carry-on weight limit. A check on bag is luggage that you cannot take with you onto the plane as the airline staff will store it on the aircraft or cargo holding area during air travel. Now that we know the difference, let’s get into the pros and cons.

Carry-On Luggage Pros

1. No Check-On Fees

One of the pros of a carry-on suitcase is that you don’t have to pay a fee to take it with you. Traveling can get expensive so why not save a few bucks that you can use to buy souvenirs instead? Sounds like a win to me. Keep in mind some airlines do charge depending on the ticket you purchase so always read the fine print.

2. Lightweight

Another pro to utilizing a carry-on bag is that it’s extremely lightweight and can easily fit into the overhead bin space or underneath your seat on the plane. I personally use Heys for its ease of navigating, built in TSA (Transportation Security Administration) lock, and luggage space.

3. Faster Head Start to Enjoy Your Trip

I don’t know about you, but once the plane lands I’m more than ready to get exploring. With a carry-on bag, you get to skip the trip to the baggage claim and exit right away (or head straight to customs if traveling internationally) now that you have arrived to your final destination.

4. Carry-On Bags Make for Convenient Travel

When I travel I sometimes like to visit more than one country or stay in multiple hotels as mentioned in my London and Belgium post. With a carry-on suitcase, travel is a lot easier because you’re carrying less stuff, can pack last minute in an emergency situation (or in general), and you’re less likely to misplace items. This leaves you with extra time to plan and enjoy your trip.

Carry-On Luggage Cons

1. Limited Space in a Carry-On Bag

If you like to pack a lot of cute outfits and buy souvenirs, then you will have little space with a carry-on bag due to the luggage size. Not only that, but if you’re traveling to a cold destination, winter clothes can get pretty bulky so you’ll have less room to work with.

2. TSA Restrictions

TSA has certain rules as to what you’re allowed to carry on and pack in your hand luggage. Here’s a detailed list. For a quick summary, you can only carry liquid items sized 3.4 ounces or less in a 1 quart-sized bag of liquids (1 Ziploc bag per passenger).

3. Carry-On Baggage May Become a Checked Bag

I listed this as a con but it can also be a pro depending on how you look at it. In some circumstances the plane may become full and you’ll have no choice but to check your bag with the gate agent for safety reasons or weight restrictions on the plane. If this happens you won’t be able to avoid waiting for your bag at the carousel BUT you will save on check on baggage fees.

4. A Carry-On Bag Can Get Heavy

Lugging around a carry-on can get pretty heavy depending on the type of bag you purchase. If you’re utilizing a backpack or hand luggage, get ready for your shoulders and back to ache. In addition, you’re responsible for lifting your bag into the overhead compartments and taking it down.

alt= "black carry-on bag and pink checked bag">
Carry-on and Checked Luggage

Pros to Checking Your Bag

1. More Space

When you opt to check in, you’ll have more space for your items (you can carry full sized liquids if you need to). Also, with a checked bag, you can carry a laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean clothes. It’s pretty limitless as to what you can bring (as long as it’s within TSA guidelines) see link above for a complete list.

2. Ease of Travel

Once you check on your bag you no longer have to worry about it until you reach your destination. This option is a good reason as makes it easier to navigate through the airport especially if you have to change gates in between flights. This is a great check on bag you can purchase for your next trip and it comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Be prepared for a lot of people to ask you where you purchased your bag.

3. No Need to Lift and Store Your Luggage

Once you check on your bag, you won’t have to worry about lifting and taking down your own luggage to and from the overhead bin. All you’ll need to do is sit pretty on the plane while other people search for storage space.

4. Easier to Carry

With a checked bag, you’re most likely going to use a rolling bag. This puts less strain on the travel process. Here’s one of the best check-on bags to buy.

Cons to Checking Your Bag

1. Luggage Can Get Lost

A risk you take when checking your luggage is that there’s a possibility the airline can misplace your luggage. This happened to my family when traveling from England and it took days to recover.

2. Checked Baggage Fees

When checking bags you may have to pay baggage charges (maybe even an additional charge) in addition to airfare with the TSA agent. This can be waived depending on certain factors (airline points/rewards for a free checked bag being one of them). Always read the fine print and lookout for additional fees.

3. Baggage Claim

The unfortunate part about checking your bag is that upon arrival at your destination, you will have to wait by the luggage carousel to retrieve your bag. This can be time consuming and can really be a bummer when you’re ready to get your trip started. Additionally sometimes your bags will have to undergo additional screening if flagged.

4. Check On Bags Can Be Cumbersome

When you utilize a checked luggage, more than likely you’re going to over pack which can make your bag heavy and bulky to carry around. If you’re looking to subsidize, then you might want to avoid utilizing a checked bag.

What Do I Choose to Travel With? A Carry-On or Checked Bag?

The bottom line (and good news) is that there’s no right or wrong to either approach. If I’m taking shorter trips or domestic flights within the United States, I’ll opt for a carry-on and toiletry bags, or garment bags . If I’m taking international flights or some sort of long-term travel, then a checked bag (along with a carry-on) is the right choice for me. The final decision rests on you ultimately. Weigh the pros and cons and determine what works best for you and your travel experience.

alt= "Partially filled inside of airplane getting ready to land">

Just an FYI when traveling it’s a good idea to keep important items like credit cards, contact lens solution, travel documents, hand sanitizer, and any mobility devices, or assistive devices easily accessible to you at all times.

Without further ado, allow me to share fresh picks of the best cities and the best places to visit in the United States for Valentine’s Day travel.

Covid-19 Disclaimer: The recommendations listed are based on my own suggestions and in no way endorses or condemns travel at this time. If you decide to take a trip, follow national and state guidelines, and of course the CDC when traveling.

1. San Francisco, California (West Coast Getaway)

A Valentine’s Day getaway in California is an absolute must. I mean how couldn’t it be? California is the perfect place with its lush greenery and picturesque palm trees. While visiting, I took a wine tour which included wine tasting in both Napa Valley and Sonoma with a stop at the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Another great option if you aren’t into wine is to take a bus tour of San Francisco. This was a great experience and it’s perfect for learning more about The Golden State. If you’re into nature and natural beauty, how about visiting one of CA’s many national parks? There are nine in total to choose from including Lake Tahoe (border of CA and NV). The best part about all of the activities mentioned is that it’s perfect for couples and friends alike.

Just an FYI if you plan on visiting San Francisco in February the temperature will be in the 60’s for the high and 40’s for the low. The first time I visited I had to purchase a jacket to keep warm. Looking for outfit suggestions to wear on the wine tour? How about a jumpsuit? That’s what I wore and is pictured below. The options in CA are endless too, you can always visit Los Angeles or San Diego if you have free time to explore the state, it’s up to you.

2. Miami, Florida (Southern Getaway)

Miami is a great Valentine’s Day vacation spot for its warm weather and perfect for a quick weekend trip; it’s a romantic place where you can stay in a boutique hotel, experience plenty of culture, and an avid nightlife. Looking for ways to impress your loved one? How about booking a private plane tour of the city? This tour showcases excellent views of The Sunshine State.

Want to spend quality time with friends? How about taking a Little Havana walking tour?  If you didn’t know, Miami has a large Cuban population. This is a great opportunity to learn more and expand your horizons. Miami is just an awesome time overall so I’m sure you’ll have fun exploring the city.

Miami Beach

The weather will be a lot warmer in Miami this time of year with the high’s typically in the mid 70’s and low’s in the mid 60’s.  It is the ultimate romantic escape. However if Miami is not for you, Florida offers a bunch of other cities to explore which makes it the ideal destination. You can easily take a day trip or romantic weekend getaway to Orlando, or the Florida Keys. Florida has beautiful beaches so make sure to pack a bathing suit, sunscreen, and beach hat for the ultimate relaxation experience.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana (Gulf Coast Getaway)

When doing research on Valentine’s Day travel ideas I knew I wanted to include New Orleans. New Orleans has a rich history including cobblestone streets, Bourbon Street, delicious food (be sure to check out local restaurants), and it’s known for being the jazz capital of the world. Speaking of jazz, why not dance the night away with your spouse or friends on this jazz cruise? You’re bound to have a wonderful evening.

alt txt = "African American men wearing casual clothing playing instruments in the street."

In the mood to be spooked so you’ll have a reason to cuddle at night? Then you’ll want to take this out of the box Cemetery tour in the bustling French Quarter. If you take this tour, be prepared to be scared silly with tales of paranormal activity and spooky graveyards. This list isn’t conclusive. New Orleans has a plethora of activities for any traveler.

New Orleans can be pretty chilly in February with highs in the 60’s-70’s and lows in the 40’s to 50’s but you won’t even notice with all of the exploring you’ll be doing. Just be prepared to dress warm for the weather. New Orleans is a vibrant romantic city that everyone raves about once they have gone.

Have you signed up yet? You know you want to! 🙂

4. Tucson, Arizona (West Coast Getaway)

When seeking a romantic getaway, the desert might not cross your mind but I’m here to tell you it should. Tucson is one of the most romantic places to travel to and is perfect for either a short trip or weeklong vacation. While visiting, I was able to go to the Tucson Botanical Garden (pictured below) which has plenty of foliage native to the area. The best way to explore Tucson is to take a bike tour where you can view different neighborhoods and murals. This is a great way to exercise and explore the area with your friends or partner on Valentine’s Day.

Interested in taking in spectacular views from the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains? Then you’ll want to visit Mount Lemmon. This tour is the perfect opportunity to hike and make memorable experiences with your loved ones.

alt txt = "Mountains surrounded by the sunrise in Mount Lemmon."

If you are looking for a more relaxing Valentine’s getaway, then you can always book one of the many luxury hotels in Tucson. Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort is a 4 star boutique property.  The boutique is a great place for a dip in one of their hot tubs or to book a couples massage.

If you’re in the mood for a quick road trip, one of the best things you can do is visit Phoenix which is less than two hours away from Tucson. Winter is actually a great time to visit Tucson because it’s not as hot. The weather is a lot more tolerable with temps ranging in the 60’s-70 and lows in the 40’s-50.

5. New York City, NY (East Coast Getaway)

I’m sure you knew it was coming, but how could I not include a better place than NYC? NYC is one of the best destinations because it has plenty of romantic things to do and romantic spots to frequent. Not to mention, NYC is also one of the most romantic cities.

Manhattan is a short drive for me so accessing these locations are pretty seamless. However, if you’re visiting for the first time you can rely on NYC public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or the yellow cab to get around. One of the most romantic things to do in NYC is to take a carriage ride in Central Park. Central Park is one of the most beautiful places in NYC and this tour includes blankets to keep you warm and toasty. Keep in mind NYC will be cold, so make sure to purchase a winter coat, gloves, and hat.

New York City Getaway Continued

NYC is a not only a popular place, but it’s a city that is perfect for taking long walks during Valentine’s Day or any day really. I can’t think of a better way to explore if you’re looking for outdoor activities to bond with your partner or friend. Are you and your partner (or friend) into art? Then how about visiting one of my favorite museums the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)? This tour will allow you to skip the line and get straight to viewing art collections.

There are so many ideas of ways to spend your Valentine’s Day in NYC such as checking out one of the many popular attractions, rooftop bars, famous landmarks, or even just having a romantic dinner. There’s a surplus of restaurants in every price range. If you’d like further insight into how to spend time in NYC check out my blog post which includes all five boroughs.

Top 5 Christmas Markets to Visit Now in the US

Oftentimes when I think of Christmas markets, I think of Europe. How about you? If you agree, I’m pleased to announce that some of the best and most beautiful Christmas markets can also be found in the USA during holiday season. In fact, I’d even go as far to say that many of the best Christmas markets in the world can be found in the US. Without further ado, allow me to share some of my favorite markets with you that I can’t wait to visit and some that I have already visited. They aren’t in any particular order. Read on for more!

Covid-19 Disclaimer: The recommendations listed are based on my own suggestions and in no way endorses or condemns travel at this time. If you decide to take a trip, follow national and state guidelines, and of course the CDC when traveling.

1) Atlanta Christkindl Market

First on the list is the Atlanta Christkindl Market which is a German market within The Buckhead Village District. This market takes place in you guessed it…Atlanta, Georgia during Christmas time. This market is is not only a great place to get into the holiday spirit, but they also serve delicious German food and beverages.

You can also do some major shopping with more than 50 vendors, sample local foods, and snap a couple of pics with Santa to complete the holiday tradition. The market operates from November 26th, 2021-January 2nd, 2022 Monday-Thursday from 11:30am-9:30pm, Friday and Saturday from 11:30am-10:30pm, and Sunday from 11:30am-9:30pm (It will be closed Christmas Day).

One of the best parts about this market is that the admission is free and there’s a plethora of convenient parking options available. Feel free to check it out for yourself and let me know what you think! More information can be found here. Traveling to Atlanta for the first time and want to explore further? Take this tour which highlights the best of ATL.

2) Cambria Christmas Market

Second on the list is the Cambria Christmas Market located in Cambria, California. What makes this Christmas market so special is that they have 2 million Christmas lights and just from looking at the pictures alone, it’s truly a sight to see. Visiting this market gives you the opportunity to support the local artisans, buy unique gifts, sample delicious food and warm drinks. If you like hot apple cider, then you must experience the German hot spiced wine.

If you’re interested in staying longer than one visit, you can book a room at the Cambria Pines Lodge and eat a special themed dinner. The Christmas market dates are currently open from November 26th, 2021-December 23rd, 2021 from 5pm-8:30pm and complimentary shuttles are offered from the parking lot. Parking is available on a first come first serve basis. More information can be found here. If you enjoyed the hot spiced wine, then you’ll definitely enjoy this hop-on, hop-off wine tasting tour which covers 70 wineries.

3) Bank of America Winter Village (Christmas Market) at Bryant Park

Now there was absolutely no way I could make a list of Christmas markets without including my hometown of NYC. Third on the list is the Christmas market (or Winter Village) at Bryant Park which is one of the most popular Christmas markets and is SO fun! There is a lot to do here including free ice skating at The Rink (you will need to bring your own skates and back pack), and delicious food options including one of my favorite pop-up shops Wafels and Dinges for hot Belgian waffles and hot chocolate.

This is an open space market where you can not only shop local and more, but you can watch the skaters at the skating rink if you’re not quite up to getting on the ice rink. The shops are open from 11am-8pm, and are open from now until January 2nd, 2022. The shops will close by 4pm on January 2nd.

Just an FYI, Bryant Park is a great NYC destination all year round as there is always something going on. You won’t regret visiting any time of the year, especially during Christmas. Parking in the city can be quite difficult if you aren’t using a parking garage, so I would highly recommend public transportation.

Read more about the Bank of America Winter Village here. Admission is also free; you only pay for the activities and food. Still feeling festive? How about taking a Christmas holiday walking tour which includes some of the best Christmas sights in New York City. This tour is perfect for New Yorkers or tourists alike, but if you’d prefer to explore on your own you can take a short walk to Central Park. Even though I’m not a fan of cold weather, this is one of those Christmas traditions I really enjoy. Come to think of it, this is one of the first Christmas markets I’ve visited.

4) Christmas Village in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a cool city in the winter months and The Christmas Village in Philadelphia is no exception to the rule due to it’s festive atmosphere. This is my fourth recommendation and it is an outside German Christmas market with a historic carousel and Ferris wheel you can actually ride. This market has a large selection of savory treats, and drink options including beer, raclette stube, pretzels, and cider to name a few.

There’s plenty of shopping to keep you warm as you peruse the market as well. The Christmas village is currently open starting from November 25th, 2021-December 24th, 2021 and the hours of operation are from Sunday-Thursday 11am-7pm, Friday & Saturday from 11am-8pm, and Christmas Eve 11am-5pm. Parking is also difficult in PA, so I would suggest utilizing a parking garage or public transportation. Admission is free; you only pay for food, drink, shopping, and activities you partake in. Check out more general information here. In addition to visiting the market, did you know Philadelphia is a very popular city? Taking a bus tour is the perfect place to learn all about its history.

5) European Christmas Market at Union Depot in Saint Paul, MN

Last but definitely not least, is the fifth recommendation on my list; the European Christmas Market in MN. This market aims to preserve and share European culture while serving delicious food, and hand crafted items.  This is a free event so you’ll only pay for food, and items purchased while holiday shopping.  If that alone doesn’t entice you, then you’ll be thrilled to know that there are different kinds of entertainment scheduled on each day the market is open, just refer to the calendar.

The market is officially open starting from starting from late November to the end of the year (November 26th, 2021-December 19th, 2021) and is only open on the weekends on Friday 4pm-9pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, and Sunday 11am-6pm. There’s plenty of parking available at this location so you won’t have to worry. Check it out for yourself here. Minnesota is not only a good place to visit, but it also has a great culinary scene. Aside from visiting this awesome market, how about checking out a food tour featuring delicious eats downtown? You wont regret it.

Dressing Tips to Wear At Christmas Markets

These locations will be very cold when and if you decide to visit. I would recommend wearing a really warm scarf, hat, gloves, coat, and winter boots to help keep you warm and toasty.

Final Thoughts on Christmas Markets

That concludes my list of Christmas Markets to visit in the US. If you live in the United States like me, now you can experience the allure and grandeur of a European Christmas Market right here in the U.S! Christmas is truly a magical time, and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy picturesque markets, beautiful Christmas trees, and Christmas music. Hudson Yards, the Vessel

First on the list is Hudson Yards. The Vessel sculpture at Hudson Yards is honestly one of a kind. It’s a must see structure that will truly amaze you in person. If you’re someone who likes adventure and climbing, this tour is for you. I had so much fun exploring the Vessel plus Hudson Yards is a great area to grab food and drinks. If you’re interested in shopping you can do that too. What makes this tour a great deal, is that it also includes the Highline. The Highline is built on a historic freight rail available to the public. Book this tour here.

Manhattan Sky Tour, New York City Helicopter Flight

Second on the list is to take a Helicopter ride overlooking NYC. Now I know what you’re thinking; “you’ve mentioned this before!” While this may be true, I cannot stress enough how fun and invigorating this tour is. I went on a helicopter ride for the first time a few years ago to celebrate my birthday with my sister and it’s still an experience I cherish to this day. The views are unbelievable and it’s a great way to conquer your fear of heights. Experience it for yourself and tell me all about it by booking here.

Private New York City Food Tour of East Village and Greenwich Village

If heights aren’t your thing, third on the list is a walking food tour that includes both the East Village and Greenwich Village. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to indulge in good eats and what makes this tour even better is that you get to experience delicious food you don’t have to spend all day preparing. You’ll learn all about historic landmarks, dive into Japanese culture, and walk past the prestigious NYU campus to name a few highlights. Take a gander to book this tour here.

Niagara Falls from New York City

Fourth on the list is a trip to Niagara Falls. I just love upstate New York; its beauty is truly unmatched and you know what’s even better? You can see the views for yourself with a quick tour that leaves directly from Manhattan. Niagara Falls is stunning in person and well worth the trip. I visited a few years ago, and can’t wait until I return. You can view Niagara Falls from both the U.S. and Canada.  If you’re short on time, this tour is ideal to view it without the hassle of getting a passport. The tour includes a return trip back to NYC so it’s honestly effortless. Check out more details here to book.

Soho, Chinatown, and Little Italy Tour

Last but definitely not least is a tour of some of NYC’s most popular areas: Soho, Chinatown, and Little Italy. Out of these three, Chinatown is probably my favorite with Little Italy second, and Soho third. However, each neighborhood has their own charm and you get to discover that for yourself. This tour includes stops along the way for you to take pictures, and grab some delicious noms. I’d highly recommend this tour if you’re not familiar with traversing the city, as this tour will cover a lot of ground with an experienced guide. Read more here to book this experience.

10 Helpful Ways to Survive a Long-Haul Flight

Travel is gradually picking back up, and you’re ready to book a trip; Only problem is the flight is long, and you’re wondering how to survive a long-haul flight. Don’t worry, I’ve put together flight tips and tricks to help you prepare for a long flight. The best part? You can utilize these flight traveling tips regardless if your trip is short, long, or overseas. I’ve mentioned some of these hacks on my social media, but I wanted to dedicate a post with even more information. Read on to learn how to survive a long flight.

Disclosure: This blog post has affiliate links which means if you click and make a purchase I may earn a small commission at NO additional cost to you. These are my own personal suggestions based on products/experiences I love and use. Read the full disclosure here.

Covid-19 Disclaimer: The recommendation for the items listed are based on my own suggestions and in no way endorses or condemns travel at this time. There is a current U.S. Travel Advisory and in some cases U.S. Travel Restrictions. Use your best judgment if you choose to travel (or you can simply hold off for now and save this guide for later). If you decide to take a trip, follow national and state guidelines, and of course the CDC when traveling.

Essentials for a Long-Haul Flight

1) Wear Compression Socks

Compression socks are essential for a long flight as it helps with circulation and increases comfort. Compression socks are affordable and can be purchased at most places; here’s the brand I use.

2) Wear Comfortable Clothing

While traveling you want to be comfortable especially if you’re on a long flight. This is why I suggest wearing an outfit specifically for a long flight. I like to wear leggings, yoga pants, or a sweat suit because it’s almost always cold on the plane and in the airport, but you can always wear a scarf, sweater, or jacket with breathable material (e.g.; cotton etc.).

3) Bring a Water Bottle/Drink Water

I cannot stress this one enough, if you’re on a long flight you WILL more than likely get dehydrated if you do not drink water. You can always purchase bottled water after checking in, or bring your own water bottle which I’ve mentioned before in this blog post and refill it at the water stations in the airport.

Tips for Long-Haul Flights

4) Get Up and Walk

This is a very important tip for a long flight, you NEED to walk in order to stretch your legs. It doesn’t matter if you have a window seat, or a middle seat, the person in the aisle seat will just have to understand. Walking helps to keep blood flowing and prevents blood clots. When I traveled to Thailand it was a 20+ hour flight; sitting for that amount of time is impossible and dangerous. PLUS mostly everyone gets up at some point during a long flight so don’t feel bad.

5) Bring a Good Book to Read/Catch Up on Work/Bring Entertainment

Bringing a good book to read and catching up on work is one of the best things to do on a long flight. Many major airlines have a USB outlet you can plug your device into so why not use this extra time to be productive? And if you’re like me, I have plenty of books downloaded that I haven’t even started yet (even worse started but did not finish lol), so I use this time wisely. A good book to read that I finished a while back can be found here. If books and work aren’t your thing, you can always download music (Spotify anyone?), or your favorite movies and TV shows (Netflix, Hulu etc.).

Long-Haul Flight Tips Continued

6) Carry Snacks

Airlines have cut down substantially on snacks and meal services offered since Covid-19, so it is imperative that you carry something to snack on. Check out some of the snacks I make and carry with me here. If you’re unable to purchase snacks beforehand, airports often have some of the best goodies. An example of this was during my layover to Thailand in Guangzhou Airport pictured below. Some ideas for the best snacks for long flights are granola, boiled eggs, peanut butter, dried fruit, salad, pretzels, etc. Feel free to carry whatever you like as long as it falls within TSA guidelines.

Did you know I share personal stories and updates ONLY to my email list? I do! Subscribe for more.

7) Moisturize Your Skin

Although I moisturize before the trip, it’s actually very important to moisturize during the trip while headed to your destination. I recommend using a good lip balm, hand lotion, and serum to keep you looking fresh faced and not dry faced (corny I know lol).

Long-Haul Flight Must Haves

8) Noise Canceling Earphones, Ear Plugs, Eye Mask, and Neck Pillow

While traveling it’s important to maintain your comfort and sanity so for me these are long flight must haves. Planes can be noisy and if you’re trying to get some shut eye or just want to relax then these items are for you. Here are some suggestions on earphones, eye masks, ear plugs, and neck pillows I recommend.

9) Bring a Toothbrush

You’re going to be traveling for a long time in the air while wearing a  mask. Do you really want to have dragon breath? I didn’t think so. By carrying a toothbrush you can maintain fresh breath for yourself and people sitting next to you. Here’s a toothbrush and toothpaste that’s easy to carry with you.

10) Bring a Change of Clothing

This is a great tip even for short flights. You never know what can happen while traveling, so it’s always a good idea to carry a change of clothing in your carry-on luggage (i.e.; socks, shirts, pants, underwear, etc.) in case your luggage is lost. Years ago when I first started traveling, my sister’s luggage went missing. The airline eventually found it, but she had to purchase new clothing until it arrived. From that point forward both her and I keep an extra set of clothes during the trip.

10 Things You Need to Know to Travel Safely

As many of you know, I travel solo majority of the time whether that be for work or for fun. Oftentimes I’m asked what I do to maintain safety while traveling. In an effort to inspire you to take the leap by yourself, I am here to deliver some travel tips! Read on to see how I stay safe while traveling (in no particular order). Keep in mind this list not only provides solo travel tips for women; Men and travel groups can also benefit.

Travel Tips

1) Keep copies of important documents!

I cannot stress this travel tip enough; sometimes we misplace items or worse, it’s stolen! This is where having a copy of your important documents comes into play (i.e.; passport, insurance card, drivers license etc.). If you have a copy of these documents, you can always utilize them at the embassy of your country of origin to have it reissued. So where should you keep a copy? In your check-on bag, purse, or carry-on. You can also use an app to keep a digital copy, but a paper copy will come in handy in case your battery dies or you lose your phone. Store all of your important documents using this organizer.

2) Research, research, RESEARCH

I do not travel anywhere without first researching that destination or area thoroughly. The last thing you want to do is to be caught off guard, or worse, in an area where it’s clear you should not be. Get to know the ins and outs of where you’ll be staying and do not explore after dark by yourself.

Solo Travel

3)Keep your loved ones informed of where you are at ALL times!

Traveling solo (or in general) is fun, and it’s very easy to get caught up in all of the things you want to do. Make sure you either share your location with people you can trust at all times, OR give them live updates of wherever you are at that moment. Additionally share the address of where you’ll be staying, the room number (if applicable), and the itinerary of what you’ll be doing. You should also leave the lights on, windows closed, and do not disturb sign on your door so someone thinks you’re home (even when you aren’t).

*Bonus- If you have a social media presence (or just in general) DO NOT post until AFTER you have already left that location.

4) Safety proof where you will be staying!

Moving to a new place can be both exciting and unnerving. I purchase quite a few items to make wherever I am staying feel much safer. Here’s a few items I purchase: ring light, window/door alarm, portable door lock, nanny cam, and door security bar. I could go on and on, but starting off with these items will help give you a piece of mind.

Solo Travel for Women

5) Self-defense items

Given today’s climate if you’re traveling alone as a woman, it’s a good idea to have some kind of self-defense item. I don’t mean to scare you, and this isn’t me saying that there are places you cannot travel alone as a woman without these items, but it is helpful.

Keep in mind if you’re traveling overseas, then you will not be able to carry some of these items with you, but it may behoove you to carry them where you live. The decision is ultimately up to you, and you can always opt-out if you feel uncomfortable. Here are some self-defense items you might find worthwhile: mace/stun gun, and self-defense key chain set. Some U.S. States have restrictions on items you can carry so research your options before purchasing.

6) Book an early flight!

I’ll admit this is not always easy to do, but try to book an early flight if you can. It’s not a good idea to be in a strange or foreign place at night, so opt for an early arrival. I once arrived in Thailand late at night, but my friends met me at the airport so I wouldn’t be traveling alone.

How to Travel Alone

7) Blend in!

When I’m traveling alone I try to blend in. Now admittedly this is pretty hard for me given my appearance (I have a big curly fro and most people can usually tell I’m not from the area), so it’s not easy for me to blend in per se. HOWEVER I try my best NOT to attract additional attention to myself. What does this mean? The last thing you want to do is look like a tourist (e.g.; looking lost/confused, scared, in awe of everything, not paying attention to your belongings). I’m not saying you shouldn’t be excited by what you see, but just be aware of your surroundings. This brings me to my next point…

Traveling Safely

8) Learn the local language

In addition to learning how to travel safely, it’s important to try to learn a few phrases or words of the local language, especially when traveling overseas. There are plenty of apps you can use to strengthen your ability to learn another language (I like to use Duolingo) or you can purchase books as well. Here’s an example: Spanish for Dummies.

9) Leave important items at home!

The last thing you want to do is wear your most expensive jewelry or carry any other valuables unnecessarily while you’re exploring. Pickpockets and/or misplacing items can happen, don’t let it! If you need to carry valuable items while traveling, utilize the hotel’s safe or carry your own portable safe.

10) Use your intuition

I know this one seems counter-intuitive (get it :)) but seriously, we can all feel when something isn’t right. If you’re having second thoughts, or feel uncomfortable, follow it! This could be the very thing that keeps you safe and even alive so don’t ignore it!

10 Helpful Ways to Support Awesome Black Owned Businesses

As many of you (hopefully) know, February is Black History Month. This compelled me to write a blog post sharing helpful ways you can patronize both small (and large) black businesses, and travel destinations. The best part about this list is that it includes black museums, black destinations, black landmarks, and black owned restaurants. These locations only scratch the surface as there are plenty of black business owners to support so keep this in mind and do your part. Without further ado, let’s get started!

Black Landmarks

Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial

I’ve talked about my love for Martin Luther King Jr before. It’s not hard to find inspiration when hearing many of the contributions MLK Jr. has done for African Americans. I highly recommend paying a visit to his memorial to commemorate his existence which is located in Washington, D.C. Book a tour here.

Restaurants

Many of you have been following me for a while, and most of my close friends know I’ve been a foodie since forever! It’s a must that I include black owned restaurants that are so delicious, you’ll be in heaven.

Black Owned Restaurants in NYC

My hometown (NYC) has some of the best food known to man so it’s only right I mention black chefs who have contributed to the food atmosphere.

1). Seasoned Vegan

I was fortunate enough to be able to dine at Seasoned Vegan which serves delicious vegan soul food with global inspired flavors located in Harlem, NY.  The food is mouthwatering and the service is top notch!

2). Amy Ruth’s

Amy Ruth’s is a staple in Harlem for delicious soul food. I’ve eaten here so many times with friends I can’t even keep track.

Black Owned Restaurants in Texas

It’s no secret that I traveled to Texas for work and did some heavy exploring on my days off. From Houston, to San Antonio, to Austin, you name it, I was there! I ate very well in Texas so I’m here to give you all of the deets.

Black Owned Restaurants in Austin

1). Sassy’s Food Truck (Permanently Closed Unfortunately)

Okay so technically Sassy’s isn’t a restaurant, BUT it was amazing for those of us who are willing to take our food on the go or sit in a designated area outside. Sassy’s was a vegetarian soul food truck located in Austin, TX and was a must visit if you were in the area. I hope they are able to reopen one day. Interested in exploring more of Austin’s food scene? Check out this Best of Austin Tour.

Black Owned Restaurants in Houston

2). Mikkis Soul Food Café

When I first arrived at Mikki’s I noticed that there was an extremely long line (this is usually a positive sign that the food will be good). I was happy to say it was well worth the wait; I highly recommend going if you’re in the Houston area. It’s popular among locals and celebrities alike.

Museums of Black History

There is so much to be learned about black history and going to a museum is one of the best ways to educate yourself. Going to museums are kind of my thing, so I’d like to share some of my favorites that are bound to amaze you.

Black History Museums in Washington D.C.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture

This museum is honestly breathtaking! I was entranced by all of the exhibitions and collections and I’m sure you will be too. It’s so important to learn about history and ways we as people can evolve. Don’t miss this museum if you’re in the D.C. area!

Black History Museums in Houston

Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC)

The Houston Museum of African American Culture blew me away with its artwork and statement pieces. I’ve talked about my love for this museum, but honestly you just have to see it in person. Your ticket for admission helps, but feel free to provide donations as well as purchase artwork and other items while attending.

Black History Museums in Atlanta

APEX Museum

I have recently visited the APEX Museum during my trip to Atlanta and what makes this museum so special is that it tells history from the black perspective. Not to mention it’s the oldest black history museum in Atlanta. I plan on re-visiting and taking this tour which includes The Center for Civil and Human Rights. Atlanta has a lot to offer so check out some of the things to do below.

Black History Museums in New York City

The Studio Museum in Harlem

This is another museum on my must see list. The Studio Museum in Harlem is a museum that showcases art from people of African descent. Art is an important aspect of our culture and influence so please check it out and support! Get to know more about Harlem when taking this Harlem Renaissance Walking Tour.

Black History Month Travel

Martha’s Vineyard

In my blog post about The Best U.S. Destinations for Thanksgiving, I briefly talked about my love for Martha’s Vineyard but I didn’t go into details why (aside from visiting family in MA). Martha’s Vineyard has an African American population due to its history. Many slaves formed residences in Martha’s Vineyard (Oaks Bluffs) before it eventually became known as a resort town. Eventually affluent and middle class African Americans moved here including the most notable President Obama and Michelle Obama. I would highly recommend visiting Martha’s Vineyard and taking this tour which showcases the islands history and culture once travel is safe to do so again.
