The Best U.S. Destinations for Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I decided to put together a last minute list of U.S. cities for Thanksgiving travel that really get into the holiday spirit. Have you traveled to any of these destinations? Read more to find out!

Covid-19 Disclaimer

The recommendation for the cities listed are based on my own suggestions. If you decide to take a trip, follow national and state guidelines, and the CDC when traveling. This goes without saying, but make sure you’re of legal drinking age to partake in some of the activities mentioned. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

New York, New York

First up on the list is my hometown NYC. How could I not mention New York which is known for its holiday decorations? The annual Macy’s Day Parade is a must see in NYC. However, if you’d rather watch it on TV or online that is an option as well. If you don’t mind heights you can’t go wrong visiting the Empire State Building; the views alone will make you fall in love with New York (which isn’t hard to do). Or how about a sunset cruise in NY? I LOVE taking a cruise around the city and they’re just as enjoyable in the Fall.

Greenville, South Carolina

I’ve really enjoyed my time in Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville has an old charm feel, as well as a new school vibe. It is known for Fall for Greenville which happens every October along with various other events throughout the fall season.

After eating all of that delicious (but heavy) Thanksgiving grub, how about trying something active? If you’re feeling adventurous rock climbing may be straight up your alley. This is a great introduction to rock climbing, where you’ll learn all of the basics. If rock climbing isn’t your thing, how about a cocktail tour? I mentioned going on my first wine tour and had a blast, so this would be great as well. It’s the holidays why not have a drink or two? You’ll learn all about Greenville’s culinary scene as well as sample a few different cocktails.

Orlando, Florida

I love Orlando, and I’ve shared my trip here at Universal Studios among other sites I had the opportunity to check out. You can easily feast on a Thanksgiving meal at Disney World, or get into the holiday spirit at Universal Orlando. If you’re looking for a newer theme park-esque experience, I’ve got you covered. How about getting an aerial view of the parks? A helicopter tour would be great, (especially at night) to really get great views and all of the deets on the sights you’re viewing. Love learning and experiencing wildlife? Then an escape to Florida’s wilderness is right up your alley.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Massachusetts is another favorite place of mine to travel and for good reason. Besides visiting family, you can visit Martha’s Vineyard, or Nantucket which are both dreamy and have a plethora of things to do (e.g..; beaches, dining, and shopping). That being said, did you know Thanksgiving originated in Massachusetts? It did! Why not celebrate where the origins of this holiday took place? After celebrating, a challenging (but fun) scavenger hunt would be great to partake in. A big part of Thanksgiving for most is cranberry sauce, well why not learn about jellies and wines during this wine and sauce tasting tour? You’ll also get an etched glass to remember this experience.

Las Vegas, Nevada

I’ve visited Las Vegas in both the summer and winter, and I’ve had a great time in both seasons. You can expect less crowds as the seasons change, and plenty to do! Vegas is pretty much busy all day, but it really gets going at night. Why not see the city come to life and take a Las Vegas Night Tour? You’ll learn all about LV, and you can hop on and off at any time.

Since we’re on the West Coast, why not take a day trip and visit the Grand Canyon? If you’re running short on time, how about something adventurous like ATV riding? Riding ATV’s are extremely fun, but as always just be cautious if you decide to do this experience. There’s no way I could talk about Vegas and not mention seeing a comedy show. Seeing shows in LV, is one of my favorite things to do, and hopefully it will become yours too!

Don’t forget to join, you know you want to! 🙂

The Best Wine Tour in the Beautiful Texas Hill Country

Have you ever been to the Texas Hill Country? Well no worries, it’s just a short drive about an hour away from Austin. What about a winery or wine tasting? I’ve never been to a winery, let alone on a wine tour, so while looking for new Austin things to do, I figured why not check out a wine tour in Marble Falls, Texas.

I learned that wine country in Texas is a big thing (I had no idea there were Texas wine tours, vineyards in Texas, or let alone wine in Texas). This particular wine tour included a 3 course meal, and after the tour you had the leisure of viewing the estate at your own pace.

Covid-19 Disclaimer: Use your best judgment if you choose to participate in this tour (or simply hold off for now and save it for later). If you decide to take this tour, follow national and state guidelines, as well as the CDC when traveling. I am not responsible for your decision to take this tour, I am simply sharing my experience which does not serve as medical or professional advice. Please consult with a medical professional about traveling. This goes without saying, but make sure you’re of legal drinking age. Social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing were enforced on this wine tour so let’s get into this experience!

Texas Hill Country

The Flat Creek Estate Winery & Vineyard is an 80 acre vineyard estate just an hour outside of Austin in the Texas Hill Country. I was ecstatic to find wine near me and a wine tasting near me. I have to say, the ease of having access to the Texas Hill Country is one thing I have come to love about Austin. One minute you’re in the city, and the next you’re in the country. The vegetation, rolling hills, rivers, history, and culture make the possibilities of things to do in the Hill Country endless.

Wine Tastings

The first part of the wine tour begins with an introduction explaining how wine became a part of Texas, followed by a brief history about the wine in Texas Hill Country. Next, a tasting of white wines, and Rosé were brought to the table. I was served Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, and Rosé; I enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, and Rosé, but I felt as though the Pinot Blanc was too lemony.

3 Course Meal

I was more than delighted to find a wine tour including a 3 course meal (you all know by now that delicious food is my thing), and the best part is that the wines served with the meals are tailored specifically to pair well with the dinner.

Appetizer

The appetizer was a delicious polenta cake with wild mushrooms. This dish was paired with a flavorful red wine named Montepulciano. Think creamy polenta, paired with wild crisp mushrooms, and velvety fontina cheese. I enjoyed the Montepulciano as well; I found this red wine to be sweet, earthy, and smooth.

Main Course

The main course was a delectable halibut and clams in a warm broth served with Tarragon pesto and a red wine named Super Texan. I was surprised that red wine was served, because seafood is usually paired with white wine. I liked this dish as well; the Tarragon pesto definitely awakened my taste buds as I’ve only had pesto made with Basil or even Parsley. The fish was perfectly cooked and melts in your mouth. The red wine was robust, and went surprisingly well with the main dish. An additional red wine I sampled was the Reserve Tempranillo which I also enjoyed. This wine was bold tasting, and had undertones of fruit.

Dessert

The dessert was something I couldn’t wait for; I was excited to see what was in store to wrap up the meal. On the menu was a pumpkin bread pudding with Mistella drizzle, and candied pecans. The pumpkin bread pudding was awesome! The bread pudding was served hot, and gooey, and the candied pecans were the perfect crunchy accompaniment. Mistella wine was served with the pumpkin bread pudding. I learned that the process of making Mistella wine is actually unique; Muscat Canelli juice is pressed and fortified with grape brandy and is very delicious.

Estate

The scenery at the estate is amazing, you can leisurely walk around the grounds, breathe in fresh air, and take photos of the stunning views. I recently learned that you can actually stay at this property if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway as well.

Final Thoughts

That concludes my wine tour experience in the Texas Hill Country. As always thank you for reading! I would highly recommend it to beginners like myself or even wine connoisseurs. What it’s Like Traveling During Corona Virus

Hello! I’ve been on a little bit of a hiatus, but I’m back like I never left with a new blog post! Thank you for staying tuned in. As mentioned in my Amsterdam blog post, I promised I would cover what it was like traveling during the novel Corona Virus. This is what occurred while returning back home to the U.S.

Corona Virus

Learning about the novel Corona Virus while away from home was unnerving to say the least. There were so many unknowns about contracting the virus, surviving the virus, as well as ways to remain healthy and safe. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous and scared.

When I left the U.S. for my vacation to Amsterdam, travel was still allowed. Towards the end of my trip, cases began to rise as well as the deaths caused by the virus. Countries began shutting their borders, and traveling home at this point was unknown. I finally managed to get in contact with the U.S. embassy in Amsterdam who informed me that I should be able to return to the U.S. as long as I wasn’t exhibiting symptoms. The representative also advised additional screening with the CDC would be required upon return.

In order to boost my immune system I took ginger shots, drank fresh fruit juices, and turned to my handy manuka honey, and tea. I always carry these items when traveling. Some honorable mentions are activated charcoal in case you become nauseous, or have gas; wipes to sanitize the room and plane, and manuka honey cough drops. Also, I highly suggest carrying bottled water with you when you travel as this may not be readily available, or a water bottle with a filter.

Travel During Corona Virus

Amsterdam looked like a ghost town by the time we were leaving (and with good reason). Upon arriving at the airport, we were surrounded by long lines of concerned travelers who were also trying to get back home. After waiting, my sister and I finally spoke to a ticket agent and discovered the flight we originally had scheduled with a stop in  Canada was canceled. We were then informed that Canada closed its borders to U.S. Citizens. What did this mean for us? After giving us the news, we were told to speak to customer service to see what other flight options were available.

After waiting in line again we spoke with another agent who found us a direct flight from Amsterdam to NY. The only issue was that it would be leaving within an hour. She warned if we were to wait for the next flight, we would risk possible cancellations or further delays. I told my sister we should take our chances and rush to make the flight although we hadn’t yet checked-in or gone through TSA.

After retrieving our tickets, my sister and I began a mad dash to catch our flight. But wait, remember the long line of passengers I mentioned earlier? Well, that’s exactly what we had to face when attempting to check-in and go through TSA. Frantically, I pulled a worker for the airline aside and explained to them our situation and we were allowed priority to the front of the line to check-in. We just made it and I was so thankful to God.

Flight

The flight itself was peaceful after the initial panic we went through. The plane was relatively empty with plenty of space between the passengers so that we could avoid sitting close to one another. Everyone wore their mask, and there were no issues. The food on the flight was also surprisingly delicious. I had the coconut Thai curry, cheese and fruit, and salted caramel ice cream.

Enjoying so far? Don’t forget to sign up for more!

Arrival

I was so thankful to be back home because at one point it was all in the air. After the plane arrived, everyone was told that they’d have to be screened by the CDC as well as fill out a questionnaire about our travels among other things. The CDC took our temperatures as well as the forms and we were on our way. After retrieving our luggage, my sister and I headed home thankful and appreciative that we made it.

Despite the scare and uncertainty of Covid-19, I will say that everyone was so cooperative, helpful, and understanding. The employees went above and beyond to ensure that not only my sister and I made it back safe, but that EVERYONE was well taken care of. The strangers we met traveling were also kind and thoughtful. This was a difficult experience, but I’m glad that I was able to overcome it.

Final Thoughts

15 Free Awesome Things to Do in NYC

Many of you know I was born and raised in NYC (Queens specifically). This prompted me to write a blog post or rather an ode to some of my old stomping grounds. I also included some places that I haven’t been to yet but will visit one day.

Why write this post? Well in addition to nostalgia, I’ve come across many articles that offer free activities to do in NYC. However, most of them ONLY include Manhattan. This blog post will include free activities from ALL of the FIVE boroughs. After all, you can’t talk about NYC without including Queens (my personal fav since I’m from here), Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

This will be one of the first, but definitely not one of the last blog posts I write on NYC. I just can’t fit all of the cool things to do in one blog post it’s impossible. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Disclosure: This blog post has affiliate links which means if you click and make a purchase I may earn a small commission at NO additional cost to you. These are my own personal suggestions based on products I love and use. Read the full disclosure here.

Queens NYC

I’m going to talk about Queens first (you already know why lol). Queens is finally gaining more popularity and the respect it deserves. After all, it’s known as the “World’s Borough” due to its diversity. Some celebrities who are from Queens include the rapper Nas and director Martin Scorsese. Nas makes great music check out his albums Illmatic and It Was Written. Martin Scorsese is known for very popular movies such as Taxi Driver, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Gangs of New York to name a few. Another fun fact is that the very popular (and classic) movie “Coming to America” starring Eddie Murphy actually took place in Queens.

That being said, Love nature? Cunningham Park will be right up your alley. Cunningham Park is one of the largest parks in Queens. It is such a beautiful scenic park where you can have a picnic, go bike riding, BBQ, or just take a walk. I actually used to play tennis here sometimes and I would highly recommend checking it out. The park also hosts different programs and events. I attended their NY Philharmonic Concert with my dad for FREE. Here’s more information.

Free NY Philharmonic Concert in the park @ Cunningham Park, Queens.

Not into nature? Okay, cool I’ve got you covered. How about shopping at Queens Center Mall? I love shopping here and eating all of the delicious noms. Check out Mama’s Empanadas and thank me later. Queens Center Mall is the largest mall in Queens and with good reason. They have awesome stores, food, and great deals. Check out more here.

Queens Continued

I’m thankful that you all are getting to know me and what I like, so by now you know food is my thing. Once summer hits, you’ll have to check out Queens Night Market. Queens Night Market is a food festival that lasts all summer long and is free. You’ll only pay for food you may or may not want to sample but who are we kidding here? You’re going to want to try it all (at least that’s my truth anyway) lol. I have not been here yet (a travesty I know), but give it time, I will! More info here.

I would not be my usual self if I did not mention a museum. I love museums and for some strange reason I have not visited this one yet (argh). Last on the list for Queens (for now anyway), the Queens Museum. The Queens Museum has free options for NYC students, NYC Department of Education employees, and children 18 or under. However, they have a suggested amount of donations for regular visitors (pay as you wish) so technically it’s free. A fun fact about this museum is that it actually used to be an ice skating rink, which now features beautiful artwork collections, workshops, and tours.

Brooklyn NYC

I’m sure this goes without saying, but Brooklyn is a VERY popular borough for obvious reasons (the famous rapper Notorius B.I.G. and Jerry Seinfeld (from the cult classic Seinfeld) are from here). Therefore to start off the list, I’m going to talk about my personal fave the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. I love surrounding myself with plants and flowers. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, it’s good for purifying the air!

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is free during the winter months, and also has select free days during other times listed here. I have been here so many times, and I never get tired of it. I would highly recommend visiting.

I’ve recently began exercising in an effort to become more active how about yourself? If not, that’s okay. You’ll still love my next suggestion which is to walk the Brooklyn Bridge.

Brooklyn Continued

I’ve walked this bridge numerous times with friends just having fun, living life, and enjoying one another’s company. It’s also great if you’d like to go solo as well. This activity is free and it’s honestly beautiful. Who wouldn’t want to take in NY in all its glory? The bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Another activity I love in Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Museum. This museum is awesome and not only has beautiful artwork, but also hosts First Saturdays which is a free entertainment event the first Saturday of every month. Trust me you do not want to miss this!

Last on the list for Brooklyn is Smorgasburg. Similar to the Queens Night Market I mentioned earlier, Smorgasburg is a free open-air food market where you can try different foods and drinks from local vendors. Entrance to Smorgasburg is free; you’ll only pay for the items you purchase. I sampled so many delicious foods I ended up stuffed but satisfied.

Manhattan NYC

Now we’re onto the borough EVERYONE knows when talking about NYC. I love Manhattan (not as much as Queens :), and found myself working in Manhattan quite a bit despite being from Queens. Some famous people from Manhattan are celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and famous actor Robert De Niro.

First up on the list is Central Park. This is honestly one of my favorite parks which runs along the Upper East and West Side. This park is so beautiful and I’ve been here on numerous occasions either with friends having a picnic, doing a photoshoot, or just walking through it after work. Check out more info here.

Me in Central Park!

Next up is the MoMA, which is the Museum of Modern Art. This is one of my favorite museums and I’ve been here more times than I can count. I also just recently learned that there is also a location in Queens (I haven’t been to it yet). This museum does have an entrance fee, BUT it is free on Friday evenings during UNIQLO Free Friday Nights. Please check this museum out, you won’t regret it.

Another great free activity is to walk The High Line. I remember seeing the construction and anticipating when it would finally be done. Friends of mine, my sister and I love to hang out here and walk. I recently took pictures here after eating brunch with friends.

Photos taken at The High Line Captured by @SheenaMahSheensPhotography

The High Line changes based on the season, but it boasts artwork, food vendors, and entertainment. You can visit The High Line any time of the year; I’ve visited during both winter and summer. More info here.

The High Line and Manhattan Captured By @SheenaMahSheensPhotography

Last up on the list for Manhattan is to take the Staten Island Ferry. I’ve taken the ferry a few times, and it’s honestly a nice relaxing free boat ride to take to and fro. More information can be found here.

Staten Island NYC

Admittedly Staten Island is a borough that I have the LEAST experience with so bear with me. I’ll try to change that. Here’s a fun fact about Staten Island, a very famous rap group named the Wu-Tang Clan comes from this borough.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way; I remember seeing sailors walking around in Manhattan and realizing it was because it was fleet week! Staten Island Fleet Week is an event where you’re able to tour the ships for free while honoring the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. More info here.

If you like to bike ride, jog, and walk, then you’ll want to visit Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach. I haven’t visited here yet, but I plan on going for the great views and beach activities. This boardwalk is free. More here.

Bronx NYC

Oh man I have so many funny stories of times spent in the Bronx with family. First up is City Island. It’s a given that when summertime hits, EVERYONE is headed to City Island for seafood and good times right on the water. Entrance to City Island is free, you only pay for what you decide to eat or drink. I highly recommend going here. Read more information about City Island here.

I of course have to tell you some famous people from the Bronx. Famous singer and actress Jennifer Lopez is from here along with the very talented actress Kerry Washington.

Last on the list, and the final recommendation for the Bronx is the beloved Bronx Zoo. How could I forget the Bronx Zoo seeing as how I’ve spent many school trips here as a child and with family. The Bronx Zoo is free on Wednesdays so take a trip and enjoy!

Final Thoughts

That concludes my list of free things to do. I hope you enjoyed the list and get to check out some of these awesome activities. Would you like more blog posts recommending things to do in NYC? Found this blog post helpful? Learn anything new or have any feedback? Let me know!

1 Atypical Day in Brussels Belgium

Traveling to Belgium? This one day atypical itinerary will give you a quick rundown on things to do in Belgium. I will also share ideas of what you can explore during your visit. Just curious, ever heard an eccentric story while traveling? Stay tuned, this blog post will give you all of the deets.

Fun Facts About Brussels, Belgium

The Belgium Flag has the following colors: Black, yellow, and red. Belgium’s official languages are the following: Dutch, French, and German; English is spoken as well. Brussels is the capital of Belgium, and Belgium’s currency is the Euro. The population in Belgium is nearly 12 million, and Belgium’s time zone is on Central European Summer Time (at the time of this post).

Traveling to Belgium

I decided to take a bus ride from Amsterdam to Belgium although I normally like to travel to other European cities by train if I can. For the amount of time I had, and the budget I was working with, traveling by bus was the best option. In order to take the exact tour I took, you can book it directly here.

If you decide to take this tour, make sure to give yourself time to get to the bus departure station, my sister and I made it just in the nick of time. It takes just short of 2 ½ hours to get to Brussels from Amsterdam. It’s a nice scenic bus ride with a well-informed guide.

Exploring Brussels

The first stop on the tour was the Atomium which is a landmark in Brussels. The Atomium apparently was originally built for the Brussel’s World Fair (more information can be found here). There is also a museum inside, but I did not get to visit.

Some notable mentions I quickly encountered were the Parc de Laeken (stunning park to take a walk), The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, King Baudouin and Boudewijn statue, St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral (a beautiful cathedral which began in the 13th century), European Quarter (if you’re a history buff this is perfect for you), Koninklijk Paleis te Brussel (the official palace of the King and Queen of Belgium), and Eglise Notre Dame du Sablon which is a beautiful Gothic church founded in the 15thcentury.

After looking at some of the monuments and landmarks, we were finally able to start exploring again on foot. Ever saw the movie Taken? Well, my tour guide made sure to put the fear into everyone on the trip about the possibilities of what could happen if you venture out too far. The morbid story included a tourist who apparently went to the bathroom and disappeared never to be seen again.

Taken Trailer

Morning

As if that wasn’t scary enough, a few scams going on in Brussels were also mentioned. One of the scams mentioned was a person (usually a woman) pretending to be homeless and when you give this individual money, a group of people then surround you also begging for money while simultaneously robbing you. This goes without saying, keep it in mind (whenever and wherever you travel) to always be aware of your surroundings, to exercise caution, and common sense. Despite the unnerving story I had an amazing time in Brussels.

The absolutely stunning Grand-Place of Brussels is where we began exploring again. The Grand-Place is the cities central square and inside you’ll find shops, restaurants, bars, City Hall, Guild Houses (town hall etc.), and Maison du Roi (The King’s House). You could easily spend a good amount of time here visiting the museum, taking pictures, and shopping.

Next up, the Mannekin Pis which is a famous fountain sculpture of a boy well you guessed it, taking a piss. My tour guide said the sculpture is said to represent the people from Belgium’s sense of humor. Visit, and let me know what you think lol. The original Mannekin Pis statue is in the Brussels City Museum. I also took a picture with Mannekin Pis’ “girlfriend”.

Afternoon

After exploring on foot, next up was a quick chocolate presentation at Planete Chocolat. This was an awesome demonstration where you are able to learn about and taste chocolates that were also sold on the premises.

Belgium is known for their chocolates, so I shopped at both Leonidas, and Godiva. I ultimately ended up purchasing chocolates, and butterscotch cookies from Leonidas, Godiva, and a small mom and pop shop (I can’t remember the name sadly :(). Leonidas and Godiva are typically tourist locations, so patronize a small owned shop too if you can. I enjoyed everything I purchased from all locations however.

You can’t go to Belgium without trying Belgian waffles. I decided to purchase waffles at Vitalgaufre. The waffle was delicious, but could’ve been hotter. Next up was shopping at a comic book store Moule à Gaufres, second hand bookstores (I visited a few, here are some you can too Tulibris, and Sterling Books), and 72 Records for old vinyl’s. Next was shopping at my favorite store overseas Primark! I mention my love for Primark and explain why in my Amsterdam blog post.

After shopping around for a while buying souvenirs and other miscellaneous items, my sister and I refueled with lunch at The Blue Restaurant. I wasn’t blown away by the food, but it was enough to hold us over for the long bus ride back. Although this trip scratched the surface of Belgium, I know for certain that I’d like to return for a longer amount of time. Brussels is such a charming city, with so much history and culture.

ConvertKit and Email Marketing for Beginners

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I recently shared a blog post on the legal pages you’ll need to set up in order to remain in compliance for your blog. Now I’m back with another resource needed for your blog, which is an email marketing software called ConvertKit. In this post I break down what makes ConvertKit a great email marketing platform, the what, how, & why you should to start an email list, and my favorite ConvertKit features.

Disclosure: This blog post has affiliate links which means if you click and make a purchase I may earn a small commission at NO additional cost to you. These are my own personal suggestions based on products I love and use. Read the full disclosure here.

What is email marketing?

In a nutshell it’s a form of communication used to build relationships with people who sign up (subscribers) and give their permission to receive updates on items you sell, advertise, and promote with you guessed it, EMAIL

What is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit is an email marketing software that prides itself on being specifically for creators (i.e.; Bloggers, Podcasters, Youtubers etc.) and is generally recommended by most bloggers. ConvertKit is one of the leading email marketing platforms that offers features and products high in demand.

The Best Email Marketing Provider to Use

The email marketing software that I personally use is you guessed it… ConvertKit. The reason I went with ConvertKit is because email marketing is instrumental to building your brand and connecting with your audience. Currently ConvertKit has a free trial if you’re on the fence and want to try out the features for yourself. I actually utilized the free trial before eventually signing up due to how easy it was to use the platform.  Additionally, ConvertKit contains great features such as:

  1. ConvertKit Community– This teaches you how to use ConvertKit with live workshops each month for FREE once you sign up for a free account. You can also unsubscribe at ANY time. In addition to the workshops, you can join groups, ask questions, and interact with fellow creators.
  2. Email Designer- ConvertKit makes writing and designing emails extremely easy. You can use Unsplash to have access to free stock photos, easy buttons to include for call to actions (CTA’s), and headers that you can personalize for your subscribers.
  3. Integrations– This feature allows you to utilize other websites (e.g.; Shopify, Instagram, YouTube, Teachable), compatible with ConvertKit to use your own images, courses, and videos; utilizing Broadcasts, Landing Pages, or Forms to promote your products.
  4. Segments & Tags– This is a great feature as it allows you to organize your subscribers into categories and only send information that you’ll know will benefit them based on what they subscribed for.

Here’s a video of the features included with the free plan:

If you’re still on the fence, try ConvertKit’s free trial to see if you’re a fan.

Why Start an Email List

You may be wondering why you should start an email list. It’s important to note that you own your email list, you can communicate with your subscribers personally, and you can tailor to your subscribers needs based on what they’ve signed up for utilizing opt-in forms (more on this below).

How to Start an Email List

Now that we have the basics out of the way, you may be wondering how to start an email list. Once you have a self-hosted website, your email marketing software set up, and lastly people that need your assistance; you can use this to create an opt-in form that entices people to subscribe. For example when you subscribe to my site, I have a freebie that I offer which lists my favorite travel gift ideas. You can utilize surveys, discounts, e-books, or whatever you decide to attract subscribers. You can always decide later what you will use as an opt-in, and how often you will email your list.

How to Utilize ConvertKit

  1. Forms- I brought up my freebie that I use to attract subscribers. This particular freebie is a landing page, however; you can also utilize forms on your site. The difference between a landing page and a form, is that a form can be embedded anywhere on your site with a few different styles (e.g.; In-line, pop-up, slide in etc.), and a landing page has its own page hosted by ConvertKit. I have included an in-line embedded form below as an example. You can also subscribe with this form or the freebie form if you haven’t already☺.
  1. Automations– This feature allows you to order the sequence you’d like to happen when someone subscribes to your list i.e.; 1) Email subscriber 🡪 2) Send to Freebie 🡪 3) Send to course etc. Automations allow you to set up content ahead of time to be sent out to your subscribers.
  2. Broadcasts- A broadcast is an email that is sent out once to your subscribers. I use broadcasts to keep my subscribers up to date on what’s new with my blog.
  3. Sequences- A sequence is a chain of emails that you can schedule to be automatically sent to your subscribers over a period of days. An example of how a sequence can be used is for campaigns, or courses.
  4. Subscriber ListThis is where you’ll go to keep track of your subscribers. ConvertKit has a list of your subscribers in one place and you’ll have the option to filter your list according to the information you’d like them to see using the segments and tags feature mentioned earlier.

Although this blog post is currently promoting the free trial, if you’re ready to sign up and want to know ConvertKit’s pricing click here to find out more. There are many email marketing platforms, however; I’m very satisfied with ConvertKit. Tip: You can also become a ConvertKit affiliate once you’ve tried the products for yourself and see how great they are.

Well that concludes my Email Marketing and ConvertKit resource. It’s time to start your own email list! Don’t forget to sign up for ConvertKit’s Free Trial to decide if it’s right for you. You can also create a free account with ConvertKit if you’re not ready to build your email list yet in order to qualify for the ConvertKit Community

4 Day Amsterdam Guide for First Timers

As promised I’m back with my Amsterdam travel itinerary. Amsterdam is the capital city in the Netherlands. This trip took place pre-Covid and during Covid. At the time I left for Amsterdam, the news and details about Covid were still developing.

I actually booked this vacation the year prior and I wasn’t able to get a refund for my trip. In addition, around the time of my departure international travel was still allowed. Please exercise caution, wash your hands, wear your mask, and practice social distancing!

Disclosure: This blog post has affiliate links which means if you click and make a purchase I may earn a small commission at NO additional cost to you. These are my own personal suggestions based on products I love and use. The full disclosure can be found here.

Amsterdam Facts

The official language spoken in Amsterdam is Dutch however English is spoken as well. The time in Amsterdam is 6 hours ahead of New York. The official currency in Amsterdam is the Euro. I did change some of my currency while in the airport but the exchange rate is high. It’s probably best to utilize an ATM while in Amsterdam or exchange money from your bank.

Day 1

Highlights

Brasserie De Serre, Rainbow Path, Moco Museum, and Kama Sutra Restaurant. *Honorable mention 420 Café and The Bulldog

Morning

My first day in Amsterdam started off normally how it would during any vacation; I was excited and ready to explore. Tip: Amsterdam during winter season is considered off-peak, so I managed to secure an awesome travel deal. Keep in mind winter in Amsterdam is freezing so plan to dress warm. Thankfully there was no snow throughout the duration of my trip.

I’ve mentioned in my other blog posts while in London and Paris on how I always (for the most part) take the public transit system in the country I’m visiting. Amsterdam was no exception; the tram, metro, and bus system were very easy to figure out. More info here.  After checking in at our hotel my sister and I had a late breakfast at Brasserie De Serre. The food was delicious and within walking distance to the hotel.

Afternoon

Following breakfast, the first stop was the Rainbow Path. My sister wanted to find the Rainbow Bridge (which FYI can be seen during the Amsterdam Light Festival). We came across the rainbow path instead in Sloterdijk. The significance of the rainbow path is to signify and promote acceptance of the LGBT community. It’s such a great attraction to see in a bustling hub. The bridge is beautiful, I’d recommend going.

Rainbow Path in Sloterdijk

Now it was time to explore the city. The first stop on our list was the Moco Museum. I mentioned before how much I enjoyed the conversation this museum sparked regarding social media. It’s an awesome museum to check out in Amsterdam.

After exploring on foot, next up was dinner. I stumbled across Kama Sutra restaurant and the menu drew me in. Kama Sutra serves Indian cuisine, and it DID NOT disappoint. It was so good! The delicious soup, naan bread, tandoori chicken, and vegetable entrees were amazing. I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant.

Dinner at Kama Sutra Restaurant

*Honorable mention

I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention any coffeshops/cafes in Amsterdam. If you’re into this kind of thing, I learned from my boat tour guide (I’ll get to this later), that The Bulldog is the oldest and most famous coffeeshop. The locals prefer 420 Café which is why I mentioned it.

I also learned that marijuana (while legal) is actually not typically accepted but more so tolerated in this country. Please be responsible in your choices and practice caution in whatever you decide. I am not recommending anything or assuming any responsibility.

Day 2

Highlights

Canal Tour, Rijksmuseum Café, Amsterdam Pancakes, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Cheese Museum, and Sahan Restaurant

Morning

Despite the wintry weather, I planned on taking a canal tour and I did just that. It’s a great way to learn interesting facts and history about the country. Amsterdam is surrounded by and built on water, so a canal tour is the best way to explore the city.

I booked my boat tour through Airbnb’s experiences section, but you can also find the same exact tour on Viator. There’s so many to choose from, so go with one that best suits your interests. The boat tours typically serve refreshments (e.g.; alcohol, soft drinks, cheese, Dutch snacks and candies etc.). I highly recommend it.

Canal Tour in Amsterdam

Following this lovely experience, my sister and I had a light snack at the famous Rijksmuseum Café. My sister and I noshed on carrot cake, an almond muffin (extremely delicious), and tea. I loved the feel of the café in the museum.

Afternoon

After the quick snack, my sister and I had time before our scheduled appointment to see the Anne Frank house. We decided to try Amsterdam Pancakes which is within walking distance to the Anne Frank house. I tried savory style Dutch pancakes for the first time. It’s an acquired taste, but I’d try it again.

Dutch Pancakes

We booked a tour to observe the Anne Frank House (if you’re planning on visiting make sure to book ahead of time as spots fill up quickly). In my opinion this is a must see.

I learned about Anne Frank prior to visiting and vaguely knew her story. It was a humbling experience to see how she lived before and during the war, as well as how much she accomplished while alive. Being able to experience the house, and imagine the fear she must’ve felt was indescribable. It’s amazing her story continues to live on to remind us of a difficult and sad time period. I truly learned a great deal. *FYI pictures are not allowed inside the Anne Frank House.

The Amsterdam Cheese Museum is also within walking distance to the Anne Frank House so my sister and I took a quick trip there. You’re allowed to try the different cheeses within the museum. We got there as they were getting ready to close for the evening, so we didn’t get to stay too long. I’d recommend visiting if you’re a big fan of cheese.

Evening

The day was spent trying different foods, so by dinner time I wanted something light. I decided to try Sahan restaurant which is Turkish cuisine. I enjoyed the food at this restaurant and would definitely go again.

Day 3

Brussels, Belgium (Day not spent in Amsterdam)

I wrote a separate blog post on this visit here. The bus tour I took to Brussels from Amsterdam can be found here. By this point in the trip, the news began to get serious around Covid. Countries began closing their borders and shops began to follow suit.  Friends and family back in the U.S. began to get concerned and contacted myself and my sister wondering how we were going to come back home. My sister and I contacted the airline we traveled with and due to extreme holding times, we couldn’t reach anyone.

I contacted the U.S. Embassy in Amsterdam, and was finally able to speak to someone. The individual I spoke with told me that my sister and I should be able to return back home after our trip, as long as we weren’t exhibiting symptoms but we’d have to undergo additional screening by the CDC.

I felt a little better once I heard this and in the meantime, took additional steps to boost my immune system. I usually carry immune boosting items with me when I travel. A few of my favorites are tea, and honey to fight off colds. I also carry activated charcoal in case I become nauseous or have an upset stomach.

Sign up to be the first to know about blog posts, resources, and freebies!

Day 4

Highlights

Albert Cuyp Market, the Original Stroopwafel, Hash & Hemp Museum, Red Light Secrets Museum, Red Light District, Primark, and Sky Lounge Amsterdam

Saturday was jam packed with activities. At this point, my sister and I were racing against the clock as many shops, restaurants, tourist attractions, and museums began to close. Rijksmuseum and the Heineken Museum were a few. Unfortunately, I did not get to go inside the Rijksmuseum to explore aside from the café. When I revisit Amsterdam, I will make sure to go.

Morning

First on the list was the Albert Cuyp Market in the De Pijp neighborhood. I loved this market! There were many choices of fresh produce, amazing street food, makeup, as well as clothing and shoes. You will find great deals here. I came across the Original Stroopwafel stand and had a freshly baked and warm Stroopwafel with caramel filling oozing out. This was such a treat, the ones given on the plane do NOT come close to the deliciousness of a fresh one.

The Hash & Hemp Museum was next on the list. As one of the oldest museums centered on Cannabis its definitely eye-opening. You’ll learn the history and science of Cannabis, the infamy behind it, as well as the medicinal uses. Whatever your views on Cannabis, I think you’ll learn something at this museum. Go in with an open-mind.

Afternoon

At this point I’m continuing on with my interesting choices in museums lol. The Red Light Secrets Museum was still open, and this is honestly a must see. It’s located right in the Red Light District. The museum itself is fascinating and located within a brothel still in its original state.

Red Light Secrets Museum

You’ll learn all about prostitution, why the women decide to choose this life, and how much the women make. The museum even lets you confess some of your secrets anonymously. You’ll see some crazy confessions on the wall; would you be brave enough to do this? Let me know in the comments lol.

It was beginning to get late once we finished at the Red Light District Museum, and the Red Light District itself began to liven up. The district began to get packed, and you’ll start to see the sex workers take up their posts in the window displays. I didn’t want to stay in this area as all sorts of characters come out so I quickly made my exit. By the way, photos are not allowed in the Red Light District; by doing so you risk being arrested or fined. Not to mention its just in poor taste.

No trip of mine would be incomplete without shopping. I fell in love with Primark during my visit in London for their great deals on clothes, shoes, and accessories so I was excited to see locations in Amsterdam.  Primark is both fashionable, and affordable. I love Primark so much; I also visited another location while in Belgium.

Evening

After a long day of exploring, I couldn’t wait to go to the very chic Sky Lounge. The Sky Lounge is a roof-top bar and lounge and has such beautiful views of the city. The vibe is reminiscent of a seen and be seen restaurant in NYC. Due to the new restrictions in place, the restaurant could only serve 100 patrons at a time so there was a longer than usual wait. In my opinion the ambiance was well worth it.

Day 5 (Technically Day 4)

Highlights

Moak Pancakes, Episode, and Noor Alsham Amsterdam

Morning

My last full day in Amsterdam was spent very low-key. At this point most of the city shutdown, so many of the plans I had were cancelled (understandably). To start the day off right, my sister and I wanted to eat at a relatively healthy restaurant in order to make sure we did not fall ill while away. That’s when we found Moak.

Moak Pancakes is such a unique restaurant in that they offer whole wheat pancakes, yogurt bowls, fresh ginger shots, and fresh juices. The restaurant workers heard our accents and sparked a conversation with us wondering how we were going to get home. After explaining that we honestly wouldn’t really know for sure until we got to the airport, the workers were so kind and gave us ginger shots on the house to help us keep up our immune system up.

One thing I loved about my time in Amsterdam is that being healthy is highly promoted. You’ll see people riding their bikes and walking everywhere. The restaurants also offer healthy options such as fresh ginger tea (with real ginger).

Fresh Ginger Tea

Following that delicious breakfast, shopping at Episode was up next. My sister who has a great eye for awesome finds wanted to check Episode out. If your into fashion and thrifting check out her Instagram Cheap_Chic_Chick. With that said, we had to stop at Episode which is a thrifting store chain in Amsterdam with vintage and second hand finds. This particular location in Berenstraat was huge, and has a wide variety of items to choose from. If you love shopping like me, please check it out.

Episode thrift store in Amsterdam

Afternoon

Although I was sad my trip was coming to an end, I was also concerned about how returning home would be. At this point in the trip, the country had completely shut down, so even finding a restaurant to eat dinner was difficult. If we found a restaurant, the lines were so long due to the restaurant only being able to accommodate a certain number of guests at once.

Thankfully my sister and I came across a simple eatery named Noor Alsham Amsterdam and had falafel wraps and chicken wraps which were delicious.

Evening

After a late lunch/early dinner, my sister and I went back to the hotel to pack, and anticipate our journey back home. We were following the news, and receiving updates from our friends and family throughout the trip.

In order to take our minds off of the unknown, we actually fell in love with this British show called Come Dine with Me. The premise of the show is that you host dinner in your home with 5 other contestants and cook a dinner experience for your guests. It’s a competition show with a monetary prize. Check it out and let me know what you think.

15 Must Have Travel Items

Travel is finally making its comeback! I wanted to take the time to share my suggestions on must have travel items for your next trip. I’ve compiled a checklist of travel essentials that can be utilized whether you’re traveling internationally, domestically, taking a cruise, or even for road trips. The best part? All of these items can be purchased in ONE spot on Amazon!

Disclosure: This blog post has affiliate links which means if you click and make a purchase I may earn a small commission at NO additional cost to you. These are my own personal suggestions based on products I love and use. The full disclosure can be found here.

Travel Checklist

1). Luggage

I cannot stress enough the importance of having durable, quality luggage. Heys Luggage is a brand that I love, and I currently use their matching check-on and carry-on bags. The best part about Heys Luggage is that it comes with a built in TSA lock so you no longer need to purchase those flimsy locks sold in stores. Heys tends to sell out quickly, so I’ll recommend more than one brand that you can also utilize here.

2). Luggage Tags

Ever had someone mix up your luggage with theirs? Or had trouble differentiating your luggage from other similar luggage pieces? Well you definitely want to purchase Ovener Luggage Tags. Aside from being able to easily identify your bags, you can fill out the information or place your business card inside the tags in case your luggage gets lost. Since purchasing, I can always identify my luggage with ease.

3) Water Bottle

While traveling it’s important you stay hydrated. I always carry my water bottle wherever I go as I drink plenty of water throughout the day. The great part about the Brita Water Bottle is that it has a filter which comes in handy when traveling overseas or in general.

4) Universal Travel Power Adapter

If you’re traveling internationally, this is an ESSENTIAL travel item. Depending on the country you’re traveling to, the outlet socket varies. The best part about the Unidapt Universal Travel Power Adapter is that it covers more than 160 countries and has four USB ports. When traveling to Paris, this device came in handy!

Travel Essentials

5) Cloth/Garment Steamer

The unfortunate part of packing is that your clothes can become wrinkled in the process, which is why it’s vital to have a Hilife Steamer for Clothes. It’s extremely easy to use, and takes up very little space in the suitcase. Always look your best with freshly steamed clothing!

Enjoying so far? Subscribe below!

6) Noise Cancelling Earphones

With the unpredictability of travel, the last thing you want to have to endure is excessive or annoying noise. Active Noise Cancelling Earphones delivers and is very affordable.

Travel Necessities

7) Travel Pillow

Speaking of quiet, once you purchase the noise cancelling earphones you’ll want to nap on your trip. The Travel Pillow adheres to the neck and prevents soreness.

8) Travel Make-up Case

I’m a big fan of Kate Spade so it was a given that I was going to purchase the Kate Spade Travel Cosmetic Bag. It helps to keep my make-up organized and prevents it from staining other items within my luggage.

9) Travel Jewelry Organizer

While we’re on the topic of make-up, let’s talk about jewelry. If you’re like me, you like to accessorize your outfits to make them pop. A great way to prevent your jewelry from getting tangled or disorganized is the Bagsmart Jewelry Organizer Case. There are different compartments for each type of jewelry as well.

10) Anti-Bacterial Wipes

Even before our current climate; I’ve always carried anti-bacterial wipes when traveling to wipe down my seat, the screen, folding tray, and whatever other surface I would be touching. In your hotel room, there are multiple surfaces you should also wipe down (i.e.; remote, light switches etc.). I recommend Dettol wipes. If you cannot find Dettol, Lysol or Clorox are just as good.

Travel Favorites

11) Kindle

I love to catch up on reading whenever I’m traveling especially on long flights. That is why the Kindle is on my must have list. This Kindle is waterproof and has additional storage.

12) Travel Scarf

I’m one of those people who is always cold. This travel scarf by Waypoint Goods can help keep you warm and the best part? It has a hidden zip that you can hide your passport, or phone freeing up space in your bag!

13) First-Aid Kit

The healthcare worker in me wouldn’t be doing her job if I didn’t recommend purchasing a first-aid kit. I ALWAYS have a first-aid kit on hand whenever I travel. I love the portable Johnson & Johnson first-aid kit which contains a variety of items (i.e.; Bandages, Gauze).

14) Digital Camera

I know what you’re thinking; I can just take pictures with my cellphone. The thing is taking pictures with your phone uses both battery and storage. A digital camera can eliminate that, and in some instances provide a better quality photo. The Canon PowerShot is a compact camera that takes great photos and is also easy to carry around.

15) Portable Charger

Not a fan of cameras? Then a portable charger is a must. Whether you’re an iPhone or Android user (Team iPhone here), you’ll want to invest in the Anker PowerCore 5000 Portable Charger. This charger fits easily into your bag, and charges the phone fast.

Paris was the second city I visited as part of my European tour with London as the first stop. Read more about my London trip here. Since I was already in London, I booked a trip on the Eurostar to take a beautiful scenic train ride to Paris which left from the London St. Pancras station and arrived in Paris Gare du Nord. The train ride took about 2 ½ hours and the price can range anywhere between €50.00+ Euros. Book your trip on the Eurostar here.

Paris Day 1

Highlights

Restaurant Indien Paris 19-Bombay Curry

Morning

We arrived in Paris early so after settling into our Airbnb, my sister and I took to exploring the beautiful Paris neighborhood by way of the Paris Metro (train) and on foot. Learn more and purchase your tickets for the Paris Metro here and read more about my other travels overseas using the public transit system here

Afternoon

My first day in Paris got off to a rough start due to a miscalculation. When exiting off my stop there were ticketing officers asking for the train ticket you purchased. My sister and I didn’t know we were supposed to hold onto the tickets so we threw them away. We were fined I believe €40 Euros which had to be paid immediately. Learn from my mistake, and hold onto your tickets indefinitely!

Evening

Paris weather can be a toss up, and the day we arrived it rained heavily on and off. Needless to say we got stuck in it. We were going to the Catacombs of Paris which after all that traveling and rigmarole was closed! There wasn’t enough time to revisit so if you go, let me know how it is. For dinner, I ate a very delicious Indian meal at Restaurant Indien Paris 19-Bombay Curry. My sister and I were so hungry photos were not taken, but I highly recommend it.

Paris Day 2

Highlights

HolyBelly, Eiffel Tower, Musée d’Orsay, Gossellin, Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor, Quay of the Tuileries, Tuileries Garden, Paul Boulangerie et Patisserie

Morning

After catching up on rest, I woke up refreshed and ready to dominate the city. Breakfast started off at the very delicious Holybelly. There was a line out the door, but trust me it’s worth the wait. I opted for the eggs, bacon, french bread, and pancakes. The vibe of this restaurant felt very “Parisian”.

Next stop on the list, the Eiffel Tower! If you follow me on Facebook, I mention how my sister and I walked the 600+ steps to the top instead of taking the elevator. Keep in mind the Eiffel Tower has a 2nd Floor, and a summit floor. Travel tip: You’re allowed to walk up to the 2nd Floor and it’s also cheaper at nearly €11 Euros. Read more about it here.

Afternoon

You know by now that I love museums, so the first one I visited was the Musée d’Orsay. The artwork in the museum is absolutely breathtaking. It’s a must see if you’re in Paris. After exploring the museum, what good would I be if I didn’t sample all of the deliciousness Paris has to offer? Dessert at the Gosselin was next and where I fell in love with eclairs and chocolate croissants.

After a quick bite we began exploring again on foot to see the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor a footbridge over the River Seine. Passerelle links the Musée d’Orsay and Tuileries Garden. The Quay of the Tuileries is such a scenic walk with beautiful views of the water. You’ll see many people walking, running, and taking photos. Travel tip: The Tuileries Garden is a great way to explore France for free. You can think of it as Paris’s version of Central Park. I was in complete awe of the beautiful greenery and statues throughout the garden.

Evening

The Airbnb I stayed in had a very good bakery nearby named Paul Boulangerie et Patisserie (this place was recommended by our host). I did as the locals do and purchased a Paris baguette as well as an assortment of baked goods for dinner.

Paris Day 3

Highlights

Palais-Royal, Louvre Museum, Place Clemenceau, Champs-Élysées, Grand Palais, Arc de Triomphe, Forum Des Halles, L’as Du Fallafel, L’Equateur

Morning

The third day in Paris was even more jammed packed than the second day as we tried to make up for lost time on day 1. I wanted to make sure I had the opportunity to experience all of the landmarks. After a brief photo shoot where I had the opportunity to model my Paris outfit, the first stop on the list was Palais-Royal and the famous Louvre Museum.

Modeling in Paris

The Louvre Museum while extraordinary, was extremely packed (and with good reason). If you’re planning a trip try to get there early. Be forewarned it’s almost impossible to get an up close picture of the Mona Lisa, however it’s an experience seeing it in person. It’s worth mentioning the other impressive artwork collection the museum holds.

Afternoon

After the museum, I walked through the Place Clemenceau, and Champs-Élysées which runs through to the Arc de Triomphe. If you love shopping, restaurants, bars, cafés, theater etc. the Champs-Élysées is the place to be. Want to see a well known monument? The Grand Palais is dedicated to French art and is within walking distance.

Speaking of monuments, a visit to Paris would be incomplete without a trip to the iconic Arc de Triomphe. You can climb the Arc de Triomphe to the top, however my sister and I opted to stay at the ground level. The Arc de Triomphe honors the soldiers who fought for France.

The Forum Des Halles is a shopping mall in the center of Paris with PLENTY to do. Seriously, you could easily spend a day here if you love shopping so I suggest you plan ahead. There’s a store for every budget, and plenty of restaurants.

Evening

Next up, L’as Du Fallafel. I love Lenny Kravitz, so when I found out he loved fallafel and recommended this place, it was a must that I go and check it out. The fallafels were served hot, very filling, and delicious! You won’t be disappointed if you eat here.

Speaking of restaurants, one of my favorites during this trip was L’Equateur. If you love Senegalese, Cameroonian, and Caribbean fare; or are interested in expanding your cultural horizons this is THE place to go.

Do your research and translation beforehand as the menu is in French. The waiters are also willing to help if you have any questions. I had the grilled chicken, rice, and plantain; the chef seasoned the chicken was so well! I honestly can’t wait to go back when I revisit.
